If they have also completed their skills assessment they will be submitting their expression of interest (EOI) and await the invitation to apply for their visa. The employer will be emailed once the migrant has submitted their EOI and when they lodge their visa application.

Visa compliance: On some Overseas Visitor Visas and Student Visas (for example the 482 & 407 Visa types), it is a compulsory requirement to have an adequate level of private health insurance for their visa application. All of Bupa Australia’s Overseas Visitor products meet the minimum level of cover required by the Department of Home Affairs and are 100% Australian Government Visa compliant.

Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS): If an individual is visiting Australia to work and has access to Medicare, depending on their circumstances, they may be required to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS). The MLS is an additional surcharge of at least 1% of their total income which is paid by all taxpayers in Australia and helps to fund Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system. Bupa Australia offer Reciprocal Health Cover which can be purchased in conjunction with their Overseas Visitors cover to help eliminate this cost. While it doesn’t offer any additional benefits for health services, at the end of the financial year the customer will receive a tax statement which can be provided to the Australian Taxation Office to exempt them from paying the MLS.

An individual will have to pay the MLS if all of the following apply:

• They are from a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement country (RHCA)* and are eligible for a Reciprocal Medicare Card
• They earn over the threshold amount of $90,000 a year for singles or $180,000 a year for couples and families
• They have Overseas Visitors cover without additional Reciprocal Health Cover.

*Countries that have a RHCA with Australia include (but are not limited to) Belgium, Finland, the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
